More Stilwell frogs -- Memorial Day 1972
Forty years ago today, a protest against the Vietnam War AND the cafeteria. It's a TWOFER!
To recap, one by one, I'm digitally restoring my cartoons printed in The Cauldron, Cleveland State University's student newspaper, way, way, way back in the days when Nixon was president and publicly supported higher education was affordable.
The crabby lady working in the cafeteria in Stilwell Hall was a recurring theme. And the coffee WAS pretty bad.

A horrible day at the fair
This was an irresistible pun that took hours and weeks to finish. For one thing, I had no idea, going in, how hard it was to draw a Ferris wheel. I would still be drawing it if not for the assistance of Photoshop. Drawing a representative variety of people was also a challenge I hadn't anticipated. Fun fact: Amy Winehouse died while I was in the middle of this one. Can you spot her?

Symmetry, of sorts
An idea from Alex. It's also the fastest drawn cartoon I have done in this series so far. Alex texted me the idea one morning.
Oh, sorry ... I should mention -- Alex is my son. I deliberately rushed through this one and posted it on Facebook within 20 minutes of him feeding me the idea. Just to mess with his head.

More Stilwell frogs -- smoking
You young people may find this shocking, but back in, oh, say 1972, it was completely socially acceptable to smoke cigarettes basically anywhere you wanted to. Including public libraries, for example. Now, if you were a nonsmoker who happened to be in that same library, say, back in those days, well, that was just too doggone bad for you. Smokers had air rights to whatever cubic footage the trailings of their cigs wafted into. This was my take on that whole situation. I guess you could say that I was slightly ahead of my time. Cough. Cough.
This is another of a series of comics that were published in The Cauldron, the student newspaper at my alma mater, Cleveland State University, from 1971 through 1972 or so. I'm ever so gradually digitizing them and throwing them up on my blog. I just hope they don't make YOU throw up. If they do, well, you are probably a smoker.

China shop
OK, this was my idea, but my son Alex gets the credit for coming up with the bull. We actually brainstormed a number of things at the breakfast table for one or two days, and I eventually settled on what you see. This is another one of those drawings where I didn't appreciate the true magnitude of the tedium until I started drawing all of those cups and bowls and teakettles. I originally had plans to apply various designs to each item in varying colors, but, fortunately, my grip on reality returned. A very labor-intensive drawing. Photoshop eventually lent me great assistance; I don't feel I have to prove anything by drawing the same damned plate 32 times.

Street scenes, part 4
My brother Rob tossed this idea at me. Yeah, he had the easy part. I had to draw it. But I liked how it came out.

Street scenes, part 2
Alex (my son) has requested that I put this on a T-shirt. I just might do it. I experimented with that a while back with a different image, but I wasn't real thrilled with the quality of the reproduction. I'm looking for the definitive custom T-shirt vendor.
